Today, Chairman of the Turkish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Movlud Cavushoglu was elected new PACE President.

During the voting held at the PACE winter session's first day, Cavushoglu was elected new PACE chairman.

Cavushoglu was nominated to the post of the PACE president from the European Democrat Group at the PACE autumn session.

Cavushoglu and Group's leader David Wilshire were nominated for this post.

Receiving majority of votes, Cavushoglu was elected PACE president from the European Democrat Group.

Based on the PACE's procedures, current president Luis Maria de Puig's mandate expires in 2010 and according to the procedure and the agreement reached two years ago, the post must be occupied by a candidate from the European Democrat Group in 2010.

Turkish MP is also rapporteur to the PACE Political Committee's report on "Necessity of condemnation of the Holodomor crime in Ukraine and the mass starvation in the former Soviet Union in 1932-33."
