21 January 2010 [20:37] - Today.Az
The 28th Fajr International Theater Festival will kick off in Tehran tomorrow, hosting renowned stage directors from around the globe.
Italy and the Netherlands will stage the most number of plays during this year's festival, which will be held until Jan. 31, 2010, Tehran Times reported.
The International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) President Kim Yun-cheol, IATC Honorary President Ian Herbert and IATC Honorary Secretary-General Maria Helena Serodio will judge the International Section along with renowned Iranian actor Davoud Rashidi and director Davoud Mirbaqeri.
The festival cancelled the performance of British director Peter Brook's Grand Inquisitor due to "extremely divergent reactions" produced by inviting him to participate in the event.
"Some have said they will not tolerate performances by his [Brook's] troupe in Iran,” the Public Relations of the festival announced in a press release.
The Iranian Parliament (Majlis) had earlier asked its National Security and Foreign Policy Committee to consider reducing relations with Britain, accusing the country of involvement in Iran's post-election unrest.
Director of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (ICHTO) Hamdi Baqaei also announced that the Iran would cut cultural ties with Britain if the British Museum did not loan the Cyrus Cylinder to Iran.
Theater-lovers will also have the chance to participate in numerous workshops which will be held by international artists on the sidelines of the festival.
Hilda Hellwig will hold a workshop on stage directing, while Canada's Levan Khetaguri and Brian Daly will hold one on character masks.
Britain's Simon Edwards will teach how to play a clown during his 'Clown Master Class' workshop, Constanze Fischbeck and Daniel Kotter will present the five-day 'Art of Tehran Video… Documentation of Theater-Performance of Urban Space', and Roger McCann will hold an educational workshop on 'Theatrical Marketing.'
