The talks between the Syrian government and armed opposition, underway in Astana, should serve as an important step in the crisis settlement in Syria, Sputnik quoted Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying.

The meeting on Syria kicked off in the Kazakh capital on January 23.

“In Syria, we both believe that the meeting between the Syrian government and armed opposition that opened today in Astana should be an important step toward the settlement of the nearly six-year crisis,” Lavrov said after the talks with the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
