The Council of the European Union (EU) approved the candidacy Herbert Salber to the post of European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus proposed by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton, the official website of the EU Council reported.

The report notes that Salber previously held senior positions in the diplomatic service in Germany, he worked in Belgrade, Vienna and Moscow. He also served as head of the OSCE Centre in Almaty.

He will start to his new duties from February 28, 2015.

Philippe Lefort currently holds the post of EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus.
