01 July 2014 [16:30] - Today.Az

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that if he is elected Turkish president, the country will have a new head and new system of governance, Turkish TRT Haber TV channel reported on July 1.

Erdogan stated that the new president will aim to develop and strengthen the country's economy.

He went on to add that fighting illegal structures in the country will be among the priorities of the new president.

Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party nominated Prime Minister Erdogan's candidacy for the presidential elections to be held on August 10.

If none of the candidates gains 51 percent of votes in the first round, the second round will take place on August 24.

As distinct from the previous presidential election, the Turkish president will be elected by people, but not by the parliament as of 2014, according to the results of a referendum held in 2007.

The Turkish president will be elected for five-year term instead of the previous seven-year term, according to the referendum results.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc earlier said the great support of Turkish people and the results of municipal elections held earlier give ground to say that Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan can be elected president if his candidacy is nominated.
