Armenia`s voting against the UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine is a national shame, Armenian National Assembly MP Alexander Arzumanyan said during discussions dedicated to the EU and Armenian relations and their influence on the internal political life of Armenia, the ArmeniaToday reported on March 28.

The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution declaring invalid the referendum held in Criema on March 16 on its annexation by Russia.

Some 100 countries voted in favour, 58 countries abstained, Russia and 10 other countries voted against the resolution.

Russia's position was supported by Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

The situation in Ukraine gave Armenia an opportunity to reconsider its membership in the Customs Union, according to Arzumanyan.

The Armenian MP also noted that the events in Ukraine contributed to Georgia's rapprochement to the EU.

The events in the world and the positions of the Armenian authorities on these issues affected the relations between Armenia and the EU, as a resulting of which political relationship of Armenia and the EU has become anachronism, he said.

This is a great shame for us, Arzumanyan said noting that there was no a situation like this in the history of Armenia's independence.

"We have never been slaves. When Russia forced Ukraine to decide at gunpoint, Armenia supported the results of the illegal referendum, and it is insulting for the Armenian people. I do not think, we need to do some heroic deeds, to condemn Russia, no, it is needed only to remain neutral, this is also a way of diplomatic relations," Arzumanyan said.

Armenia, demonstrated itself as it really is, equating to such countries as Zimbabwe, Sudan, Venezuela and a number of other similar countries, so to talk about democratic values is ridiculous, the MP said.

To say that we strive to Europe, is an absurd, according to Arzumanyan. Armenia became a country with which nobody will consider. Armenia gives a second slap in the face of the EU by not its own, but Russian hands, he said.

An agreement on the adoption of the Crimea to Russia was signed on March 18 in Kremlin.

A referendum on the status of Crimea was held on March 16. More than 96 percent of voters voted for the autonomy joining Russia.

Most world countries issued a statement of non-recognition of the referendum results.

There was a change of power in Ukraine on February 22.

The Verkhovna Rada ousted President Yanukovych, changed the constitution and set the presidential election on May 25. Yanukovych said that he was forced to leave Ukraine under threat of violence. He remains the legally elected president. A number of areas in eastern and southern Ukraine, as well as Crimea did not recognize the legitimacy of the Verkhovna Rada and made a decision on holding a referendum on the future situation of regions.
