At least 30 percent of about 450,000 Armenian drivers live in poverty, according to the Armenian Justice Minister, Hrair Tovmasyan.
Tovmasyan made these remarks following a government meeting on March 27, the news.am website reported.
He said a working group of the government will in the coming two or two and a half months examine the state of traffic in Armenia and the adequacy of imposed fines.
Tovmasyan went on to say that in some cases the fines are unreasonably high and are particularly hard for the poor population to pay.
"For example, a farmer is transporting vegetables from a village to a market in Yerevan. During a day he will earn a maximum of 5,000 to 10,000 drams. And these 5,000 or 10,000 drams can be taken from him, if he just crosses over the solid line. Here an analysis should be conducted," the Armenian minister said.
