Turkey has blocked the video service YouTube, Turkish Hurriyet Daily News newspaper reported on March 27.

Turkey's Telecommunication Directorate (T?B) has announced the blocking of direct access to the popular video service YouTube in the Turkish segment of the web.

The newspaper said that the ban was ordered hours after leaked recordings of a key security meeting were published on the video sharing website.

The meeting discussed a possible military intervention into Syria, according to the newspaper.

On March 21, Turkey blocked access to the microblogging network Twitter.

The access was blocked a few hours after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a statement about such a possibility.

At the time he did not rule out banning YouTube and Facebook if needed in order to protect Turkish citizens from external influences.

However Turkish President Abdullah Gul made a statement about the impossibility of banning YouTube and Facebook. He also said a total ban on Twitter in Turkey can not be considered.

Microblogs on Twitter were blocked in Turkey by a court decision, according to the Turkish media.

It was also reported that Turkey demanded Twitter delete the tweets that are against Turkish statehood, however the company has not yet responded.
