The president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Jose Sulaiman, has died, the council said Thursday. He was 82, dpa reported.

"We deeply regret to inform the passing away of our dearest president Don Jose Sulaiman," the WBC said on its Twitter feed. "May he rest in peace."

Sulaiman died in a hospital at the University of California Los Angeles. The Mexican underwent bypass surgery in October.

Sulaiman led the WBC for more than 38 years. According to the Guinness Book of World Records he was the world's oldest serving president of a sports association. In November the WBC gave him the title of President for Life.
