On Wednesday, April 3, President Dalia Grybauskait? will meet the President of Turkey, Abdullah Gul. During the meeting the Presidents will discuss Lithuania-Turkey bilateral relations, business ties, and the prospects of their development. In the run-up to Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council, the heads of state will also touch upon the progress in Turkey`s EU accession negotiations.

The Turkish leader is coming with a large business delegation. The Presidents will review economic relations between Lithuania and Turkey, the opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation in developing the railway project Viking which connects the Baltic and Black sea regions. They will open Lithuanian-Turkish business forum during which a memorandum of cooperation in this project will be signed.

The heads of state will also address the possibilities to promote business relationship, investments and trade. Last year, trading turnover between the two countries reached LTL 961.2 million.

Turkey is one of the most popular outbound tourism destinations for Lithuanians. New direct flights on the Vilnius-Istanbul route, planned from this June, are to increase tourist flows between Turkey and Lithuania.

Turkey is an important partner of Lithuania and the EU in economic and security spheres. During EU Council presidency Lithuania will seek reciprocal constructive dialogue between the European Union and Turkey as well as progress in Turkey`s EU membership talks which started in 2005 and are continuing.

This is the first official visit to Lithuania by incumbent Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
