The initiative of GUAM member states to resolve conflicts in the regions are important, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of GUAM, MP Elton Mammadov said in Baku at the opening of the international conference "Establishing relationships across borders". The conference was jointly organized by the GUAM PA and the Baltic Assembly - an consultative body for cooperation between the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
As Mammadov said that after gaining independence, Azerbaijan faced Armenia's aggression, but "the international community, rather than solve this problem, has used double standards."
He believes the conference will serve to strengthen relations between GUAM PA and the Baltic Assembly.
According to Mammadov, the relationship between the two bodies in recent years has successfully developed, and this cooperation covers the regions of the Caspian, Black and Baltic Seas.
According to the GUAM PA chairman Anatoli Dimitriou, who addressed the conference, the Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Baku is important for the organization's member countries on the path of approximation to the European Union and the expansion of mutual cooperation.
In particular, Dimitriou stressed the importance of developing relations in the fields of transport and tourism. In addition, he said, GUAM countries should focus on international cooperation issues.
The conference will discuss energy security in the GUAM and political stability in the Baltic region, as well as ways of integration into the EU and the development of nanotechnology.
