Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev arrived with a working visit to Belgium on Tuesday, where he will meet with the EU officials.
"I am looking forward to a fruitful and open discussion with President Aliyev", EU Commission president José Manuel Barroso said ahead of the meeting. "We will take stock of the progress in our bilateral relations and will also discuss important energy issues, namely, the way forward on the Southern Gas Corridor which we agreed to establish during my visit in January and which remains a shared strategic goal of the European Union and Azerbaijan".
During the meeting the important issues of political reforms and the rule of law for Azerbaijan's modernization and development will be also raised, the EU press-service quoted Barroso as saying.
Besides the discussions with the Head of European Commission, President Aliyev will meet with the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, as well as the European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek and Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle.
The head of the EU delegation, Ambassador Roland Kobia also left for Brussels to accompany President Aliyev during his meetings.
