"The situation is unstable, potentially explosive in the South Caucasus," Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said at the international conference "Collective Security Treaty Organization and South Caucasus: prospects for peace and security in the region" in Yerevan. Minister said Armenia is interested in strengthening stability in its borders.
"First of all, I want to note that Nagorno Karabakh conflict has not been solved yet. We unambiguously support peaceful solution of the problem and we hope the position of the Armenian side will be understood by our allies in the Collective Security Treaty Organization," he said.
Seyran Ohanyan threatened Azerbaijan with the opportunities of the military bloc. "In case Azerbaijan resumes military operations against Nagorno Karabakh we will interfere in the process to make the aggressor abandon its plans, because Armenia is the guarantor of security of the people of Nagorno Karabakh. We solved this problem on our own in 1994. Taking into account that Armenia is the member of CSTO, we have the right to expect appropriate reaction and support of our allies in the organization. Firstly, the members of the CSTO have obligations and secondly they have concrete opportunities to react adequately to possible aggression," he said.
"The situation has become much tenser in Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone due to the military rhetoric of Azerbaijan," said Secretary General of the CSTO Nikolay Bordyuzha. He said peaceful solution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is the principled position of the CSTO.
"The existing tension can result in the start of the armed conflict at any moment," he said. Nikolay Bordyuzha said irrespective of the level of the relations between the countries of the region, the isolation of any state is inadmissible.
"This fact is envisaged in a number of documents of CSTO and in the statements of our foreign ministers in the recent year. The cause of such an approach is clear – isolation violates the principle of equal security. In this context the position of Tbilisi causes concern. The question is the military preparations through involvement of the factors beyond the region," he said.
