The leader of the Azerbaijani opposition Liberal Party Lala Shovket Hajiyeva has issued a statement this week in connection with the ongoing events in Egypt. Human rights and freedoms are recognized priorities in the globalizing world, the statement reads.

"Today, the myth inspired to the world community over the years is that supposedly the main forces in Muslim countries - radical Islamists - were destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people, protesting in the streets are the educated youth. They want democracy and freedom," the statement says.

The opinion that the Muslim people, and their mentality and Islamic culture do not correspond to democracy is widespread. Someone needs this myth, she said in a statement.

"Today, as a representative of the democratic forces, the Liberal Party and I fully support the people of Egypt and the people fighting for justice and democracy in other Muslim countries, and say 'No' to dictators. 'Let God help you!'" she said.

The manifestations with the requirements of conducting economic and political reforms and the resignation of 82-year-old President Hosni Mubarak, ruling the country for 30 years, were launched in Egypt on Jan. 25. On Friday, the mass protests continued in Cairo and other Egyptian cities. Roughly 100 people died; more than 2,000 were injured.
