Pluralistic press plays a special role in holding democratic elections, OSCE Baku Office Head Ali Bilge Cankorel said today at an event dedicated to media's role in covering the elections.

Cankorel expressed confidence that steps forward will be made at the parliamentary elections compared with previous elections, in what the media will play an important role.

The OSCE Office has made proposals on amending the Electoral Code, according to which the media outlets will be given equal opportunity to cover the electoral process. The National Broadcasting Council is meant to create the necessary conditions for election coverage on the television channels, Cankorel said.

Moreover, in his opinion, private television channels should devote more time to the political campaigns.

Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for November 7, 2010. The previous elections were held in November 2005. The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies.
