30 January 2008 [10:36] - Today.Az
Draft laws offering to cancel Jackson-Venick amendment towards Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, were introduced for consideration in the US Senate.

The due initiative has been put forward by Indiana senator Richard Lugar.

He explains the necessity to cancel the amendment with the fact that Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan made everything possible to ensure citizens' right for emigration after the cold war.

The author of the project considers that the cancellation of Jackson-Venick amendment will help Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to advance on the way to democratic reforms and stabilize situation in the region.

Jackson-Venick amendment, introduced in 1974, restricts US relations with countries which impede the freedom of emigration.

This amendment is effective for Russia, but has been canceled for a number of former USSR states, in particular, for Ukraine.
