Political analyst Fikret Sadikhov said Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the relations with Iran, taking the necessary steps to further develop them. However, despite this, the Iranian media outlets continue attacks against Baku.
The Iranian media falsely presents the situation in Azerbaijan, the publications even ‘advise’ Azerbaijan how and with what states to build relationships and reflect claims, accusations and threats against Baku. Sadikhov believes this cannot be a position of the certain media without the direct order and consent of some forces in the country’s ruling circles.
"Development of the Azerbaijani-Iranian relations meets our national interests,” Sadikhov said. “However, Iran sometimes takes an illogical position on such a sensitive issue. Although, Iran’s ruling circles have recently promised to put an end to the media’s attempts to slander and tarnish Azerbaijan, as well as to stop attempts to interfere in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs, Tehran failed to keep its word. I would like to note that Azerbaijan’s most radical opposition newspapers are careful in their articles and comments about Iran. During the Tehran visit of Presidential Administration Social and Political Issues Department Head Ali Hasanov, the sides also mulled the problem of inadmissibility of biased and unfounded publications, comments and information in the Iranian media that directed against Azerbaijan’s interests. During the talks, the Iranian side promised to put an end to this. However, the recent media reports indicate that Iran forgot this promise and put its execution aside. "
He said the Iranian media’s such a behavior is explained by certain reasons. “Tehran, faced with the harsh reaction of the international community and affected by serious logistical and economic sanctions in connection with its nuclear program and uranium enrichment, is seeking power and states that would support it in a difficult position.” “Some government officials in Iran are in a search of a wayout of the situation,” he said. “They accuse others of the present difficult situation in the country and will to justify themselves by this. That is, these groups want to put responsibility on others.”
Sadikhov noted that the Iranian media tries to force the Azerbaijani side to "more openly "voice Baku's position towards Tehran.
"Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated that it does not interfere in the confrontation between Iran and the West. We do not express open support for the West or Tehran in this matter. At the same time, Azerbaijan announced that its territory will never be used against Iran. We are against any attack on Iran. But, what we can do if our position does not "satisfy" the radicals in Iran. It seems that certain circles in the country are going to "take revenge" to Azerbaijan, but these attempts are ineffectual. It’s impossible to change the position of Azerbaijan, conducting thoughtful and patient enough foreign policy,” he stated.
