Azerbaijan, OIC discuss preparations for Islamic Solidarity Games

Organization of the Islamic Solidarity Games is on the focus of the Azerbaijani state and all relevant organizations provide the necessary support in this case.

Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfaz Garayev made this remark on September 13, at the meeting with Iyad Ameen Madani, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, who is on a working visit in the country.

Garayev informed the guests that during the Islamic Games, Azerbaijan will organize interesting cultural shows.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games is a multinational and multi-sport event involving the elite athletes of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, which is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the UN with 57 member states spread over four continents.

The secretary general of the OIC, for his part, said that the main goal of his visit is to familiarize himself with preparation prior to the Games.

The decision to hold the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku was made at the eighth General Assembly of the ISSF in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in July 2013.

The official opening ceremony and closing of the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games will be held at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

The Games will bring together athletes from 57 countries under the slogan “Solidarity is our power”. More than 160 Azerbaijani sportsmen are expected to participate in the Games. Over 5,000 athletes will compete in 20 sports disciplines that during the 12 days of competition. The Muslim religion of all athletes is not a pre-condition for participation in the competition.

The meeting also exchanged views on prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the OIC.

Preparations for events to be held as part of declaring Nakhchivan the Capital of the Islamic Culture in 2018 were also discussed at the event.

Nakhchivan, one of the centuries-old cultural center of the world with its five-thousand-year history, played an important and invaluable role in the development of Islamic culture. Awarding one of the most ancient cities of Azerbaijan with such a significant status in fact shows the significance the Islamic world attaches to the country.
