Chess fans can now take a photo with a mascot of the 42nd World Chess Olympiad 2016 to be held in Baku, as the mascot is available at 28, Park Bulvar and Metro Park Malls, as well as Baku Chess Olympiad’s information center every day of the week for photo sessions.

CHESS MATE appears at the malls between 15:00 and 18:00 and between 19:00 and 21:00 in the National Park and Fountains square.

The mascot is a young chess player. He wears glasses, while his clothes are a combination of national and modern features. You can see Buta images and some carpet patterns on his gown. The youngster’s shirt, trousers and shoes are modern.

The king is an important piece in chess. There have been kings in Azerbaijani history, too. This is why the young man wears a king’s gown.

The mascot was designed by Musa Jangiyev, a winner of mascot competition, organized by Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee in March.

With 2,000 chess masters from 180 counties, FIDE’s biennial chess tournament, will gather teams from all over the world to compete for the best title.

The opening ceremony of the Olympiad will be held in the National Gymnastics Arena, while charming Crystal Hall, once hosting Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, will host the games.

The budget for the Olympiad is 13.3 million euros. Some 6.8 million euros are set aside for first-class accommodation for the players and delegates. Another 1 will go to the FIDE Commission for World Championships & Olympiads and intellectual rights.
