Veteran weightlifters to vie for European crown in Azerbaijan

European Veterans Powerlifting Championship will be held in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, on May 20-28, Azertac reports.

The tournament will bring together about 200 athletes from 21 countries.

The Azerbaijani team includes three female and 24 male weightlifters.

Wrestling, shooting, fencing, racing and weightlifting remain popular sports in Azerbaijan famous for its rich sport traditions.

The development of weightlifting in Azerbaijan has been in the spotlight of the international community in recent years.

In 2014, the country hosted European Powerlifting Championships which brought together nearly 300 athletes from 27 countries.

Over 50 Azerbaijani athletes vied for the medals. The gold medals came from national athelets Elnara Guliyeva, Gunel Talibova, Sara Abbasova, Kamran Badalov, Elmir Tarverdiyev, Farid Gurbanov, Zerdush Hasratov, Sarkhan Gasimli, Orkhan Ahmadzade and Vusal Aliyev.
