Lokomotiv claim Azerbaijani derby to set sight on playoff spot

20 January 2016 [11:12] - TODAY.AZ

An Azerbaijani derby opened the programme of Round 5 in the 2016 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women and Lokomotiv BAKU eventually emerged victorious from the clash with Azerrail (3:1; 21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-14) to cement their second place in the standing of Pool A and get closer to their qualification to the Playoffs 12 of Europe’s elite competition.

Lokomotiv had strengthened their roster after signing American Sonja Newcombe during the holiday season whilst Azerrail had to opt for many young and inexperienced players for this much anticipated match as their major stars have been struggling with injuries lately. Yet this did not seem to be a problem in the early stages of the matches with Azerrail cruising to a 25-21 win in the opening set.

The second set was a close affair with Lokomotiv eventually coming out on top at 25-22 and they got the right boost of confidence from that win to easily sweep set 3 and 4 (25-15 and 25-14) and claim their third win in the competition to cement their second place in Pool A behind Russia’s Dinamo KAZAN.
