Mingachevir hosts International Regatta competition

Azerbaijan’s Mingachevir region hosted the international Presidential Cup Regatta on November 9, which included academic, kayaking and canoe races.

Held at the Kur Olympic and Rowing Center, the competition saw participants among athletes of different ages, as more than 100 rowers from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine competed.

The brightest competition was held among senior athletes.

Among those competing in the academic competition, national athlete Boris Yotov took first place in the 2,000-meter race.

The 19-year-old Yotov reached the finish line at 7:21:06 seconds, beating out Aleksandr Aleksandrov, World Champion in Academic rowing, by 53 seconds.

Of note, that team of Boris and Aleksandr achieved success at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in France this year, securing their qualification to compete at Rio 2016.

Third place went to Javid Efendiyev, finishing at 7:35:06 seconds.

In the single 200-meter kayaking competition, national rower Tamerlan Mustafayev took third place, thus leaving behind Mirnazim Javadov, the national bronze medalist from the 2014 European Championship, who finished fourth at 40:22 seconds.

In the canoe competition, Nikita Sablin of Azerbaijan claimed first place in the 200, 500 and 1,000-meter competitions. In the 200-meter competition he reached the finish at 44 seconds. Another national rower, Aleksey Kupin, won second place, whose time was one second behind the first place winner. Third place went to Georgian rower Malkhaz Tsintcharashvili, who finished in 47.48 seconds.

In the 500-meter competition, Sablin also took first, while Azerbaijani Taras Matviychuk finished second and Kupin placed third.

In the 1000-meter canoe competition, where Sablin also came in first, the canoeist outstripped Kupin by 1 second.
