Steve Finnan: Search on for 'missing' Liverpool defender

21 May 2015 [17:15] - TODAY.AZ

You would imagine a player would jump at the chance of reliving one of the greatest nights in European football, but for one man that is not the case.

Former Liverpool defender Steve Finnan appears set to miss the 10th anniversary of the Reds winning a dramatic 2005 Champions League final.

Organisers of the event on Monday 25 May have invited all of the squad from the match apart from Finnan, who they could not locate after searching high and low.

A hashtag of #FindSteveFinnan was even created on Twitter to try to track the former Republic of Ireland international down.

An Irish journalist claims Finnan is in London and happy keeping a low profile.

"I gather that Steve's living in London these days, playing a bit of golf and genuinely not interested in seeking a post-football media career unlike so many of his former colleagues," said Irish Independent  reporter Daniel McDonnell.

"It makes sense as he certainly wasn't one for seeking the limelight when he was playing."

Finnan was a regular in helping Liverpool to the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

He played the first half against the Italian side before going off injured at the break with with Liverpool 3-0 down.

The Reds then staged a comeback to level at 3-3 before winning the match after extra-time and penalties.

Finnan made 217 appearances in all for Liverpool, while he also earned 53 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
