The Slovenian national champion made his every effort in the final kilometer to take second place behind the lone escapee who won the stage. Dennis van Winden, the other Synergy Baku Cycling Project rider left in the race, taking the eighth place.

Mugerli said that their preparations for the Tour d’Azerbaidjan went exactly as planned. “My form is good, as my second place finish in the final stage today showed. Now, I am on my way to Baku!”

It all went according to plan, said DS Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary. “I am very happy with today’s result. We decided to do nothing until the last 20 km. Matej attacked in the last 500 meters and took the second place.”
