The Netherlands is the main contender to host the European Games in summer 2019, said Alexander Kozlowsky, the Vice President of the European Olympic Committee.

While Azerbaijan is preparing to host the grandiose European Games in 65 days, the name of the next country to hand the baton is still unclear. The capital of the second European Games will be elected next month at the Extraordinary General Assembly of the EOC in Turkey.

"The European Olympic Committee, in contrast to the International Olympic Committee, has its own approach to the election,” he said, TASS reported. “We deliberately did not declare the competition between the candidates, to avoid an expensive bidding war in between EOC members."

“We are looking ourselves to determine who is more worthy to hold these Games. Now, our candidate is the Netherlands,” Kozlowsky stressed.

Speaking about the traditional seminar of the European Olympic Committees scheduled for May, he said, the last day of the event will be transformed into an Extraordinary General Assembly.

“It will last less than an hour, and is likely to offer the Netherlands as the venue for the following European Games," the vice president said.

The competition will take place not only in Amsterdam or Rotterdam, but across the country, he added.

"The small size of the country makes this dispersion quite appropriate. The European Games in 2019, as well as in Baku, will be experimental. We are looking for the best option to hold this unique event," Kozlowsky added.

The Netherlands has shown a keen interest in holding the European Games in 2019. Earlier, Great Britain, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Belorussia and Turkey also expressed a wish to take the torch from Baku after 2015.

"We had some talks with other countries that have expressed an interest in holding the European Games. I will not name any specific country, but it is those states that which previously failed to be nominated for the Olympic Games," the vice president summed up.

This year’s exciting and innovative new multi-sport event in Baku will include 20 sports, 16 of which are Olympic, during the 17 days of competition in June 12-28. 6,000 athletes will prove themselves in Azerbaijan’s capital.
