Chess Grand Prix FIDE kicks off in Baku

Baku hosted the opening ceremony of Chess Grand Prix FIDE (World Chess Federation) on October 1.
The first stage will continue until October 15.
Opening the event, Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov noted the progress made in Azerbaijan in this sport.
He said implementation of the state program on the development of chess sport played a key role in achieving the progress made so far in this sport.
For his turn, the Head of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation Elman Rustamov expressed satisfaction with the achievements in this field.
"This proves once again that the federation is a reliable partner of FIDE," he added.


Rustamov stressed that successes in chess sport in the country are part of the achievements reached in all areas.
"Azerbaijan will host the Chess Tournament in 2015 and the Chess Olympiad in 2016 at the highest level," Rustamov said.
FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov noted that the history of Grand Prix began in Azerbaijan back in 2008.


He stressed that Azerbaijan is the only country member of FIDE, that has a state program for the development of chess. Ilyumzhinov added that several chess clubs have been opened across the country.
A cup that will be awarded to the winner of the tournament is made ??of diamonds, gold and silver.


The competition is attended by 12 grandmasters, including Azerbaijan's chess grandmasters Shakhriyar Mammadyarov and Teimour Radjabov.
Other participants of the tournament are Fabiano Caruana, Alexander Grischuk, Sergey Karjakin, Dmitry Andreykin, Peter Svidler, Evgeny Tomaszewski, Leinier Dominguez, Boris Gelfand, Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Hikaru Nakamura.
The first game of Baku's stage will be held on October 2. Each player will take part in three of the four tournaments. Each tournament will involve 12 participants.
The prize fund of the first stage is equal to 120,000 euros. The winner of the tournament will receive 20,000 euros.


Winners of the first and second places in the four stages will have the chance to fight for the Champion.
The next two stages will be held in Tashkent and Tehran.
