Azerbaijan stores a successful golf tournament to ist sportive memory

Azerbaijan's one of the most picturesque places, Guba city, hosted open golf tournament dedicated to the memory of National leader Heydar Aliyev on June 7.

Organized by Azerbaijan's Golf Federation (AGF), the tournament brought together 50 amateurs with a recognized handicap, including Azerbaijani citizens and foreigners working in the country, as well as golfers from foreign countries.

Addressing the opening ceremony, President of the Azerbaijani Golf Federation Anar Mammadov noted that holding of such competitions in Azerbaijan is of great significance for the development of the sport.

Guests of the event were conveniently accommodated in specially installed tents where they were able to enjoy an incredibly beautiful nature of Guba and taste its delicious dishes. Moreover, everyone could try themselves as golfers.

An awarding ceremony was held after a tense struggle which lasted for six hours. Mahmut Keylu, Young Wang Kim and Charles Richard Foote took the first three places respectively. The winners were awarded trophies and various awards.

The goal of the tournament was to offer a competitive environment to golfers of different skill levels locally and internationally, to enjoy a fun-filled program and to promote golf in the region. It was also aimed at introduce Azerbaijan as a competitive golf tourism destination to the players.

The tournament was organized in the format of "Mixed Stroke Play" 18 wells. Organizers have created all the conditions for a fair competition. Two days before the tournament they have been assigned training, and special vehicles were also provided for the convenience of the participants.

Registration fees of the players participating in the competition will be donated to charity. Thus, funds gained with the support of the "Resource Network For Children With Disabilities" Public Association will be spent on the purchase of wheelchairs for disabled children.

Moreover, "Nargis Fund" and "Olive Project" organized charity events during the tournament.

"YAY!" Gallery and "Vault Prive" Boutique presented their lots at auction. Among the works of art presented at the auction were examples of painting and sculpture, as well as accessories for men. The funds will be directed to the treatment of Shahriyar Aliyev, the only carrier of a genetic disorder Niemann-Pick in Azerbaijan.

Addressing the awarding ceremony, Anar Mammadov congratulated the winners and wished them success in future competitions, adding that the first national golf tournament will be remembered as the competition held at a high level.

Mammadov said the tournament will become a traditional and will be held annually in various categories. Head of the Federation also noted that another prestigious international golf tournament will be held in Guba in August, 2014. The competition, which will be held from August 28 to September 3, is expected to bring together more than 150 professional golfers.

Azerbaijan's Golf Federation was founded not so long ago in 2012. The federation has had some successes in such a short time, as the Guba National Golf Club and the Golf Academy in Baku have been created.
