Carlsen still leads Hashimov Memorial table

The grandmasters left behind the eighth round of the Shamkir Chess 2014 international tournament.

The latest round of the tournament dedicated to Azerbaijan's late grandmaster Vugar Hashimov became successful for Italian Fabiano Caruana and U.S. Hikaru Nakamura.

Thus, Caruana defeated Azerbaijani Teymur Rajabov on the 52nd move, while Nakamura won over Azerbaijan's Shahriyar Mammadyarov on the 47th move. Russian Sergey Karjakin and reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen played in a draw.

A tournament's standings after the eighth round is as following: Carlsen - 5, Caruana - 4.5, Karjakin, Rajabov, Nakamura - 4 and Mammadyarov - 2.5.

In the B tournament, Azerbaijani Vasif Durarbeyli won over his compatriot Rauf Mammadov, Ukrainian Pavel Eljanov defeated Azerbaijan's Gadir Huseynov, while Russian Alexander Motylev won over French Etienne Bacrot.

Other games were less effective for the players. Thus, sets Eltaj Safarli (Azerbaijan) - Wang Hao (China) and Radoslaw Wojtaszek (Poland) - Nijat Abbasov (Azerbaijan) ended in a draw.

Standings is as following: Elyanov - 5.5, Wojtaszek, Bacrot, Motylev - 4.5, Huseynov - 4, Abbasov. Durarbeyli -3.5, Mammadov - 3 and Safarov - 2.5.

The ninth round of the Vugar Hashimov Memorial will be held in Azerbaijan's Shamkir on April 29.

This round will see the following games: Mammadyarov will play against Caruana, Carlsen will face Rajabov, while Karjakin will play against Nakamura. The B tournament will see the games Wang - Durarbayli, Bacrot - Safarli, Huseinov - Motylev, Abbasov - Eljanov and Mammadov - Wojtaszek.

Shamkir Chess 2014 opened in the Heydar Aliyev Center on April 19 and will run until April 30.

The event, organized by JSC Synergy Group, is being held as part of the "State Program on development of chess in Azerbaijan in 2009-2014". It is dedicated to world-famous Azerbaijani grandmaster Vugar Gashimov who passed away as a result of a serious disease in January.

Money prize of the A tournament, sponsored by "Synergy Group" is 100,000 euros, while the prize fund for this tournament will be 30,000 euros.
