The official website of the International Orienteering Federation has published an article headlined “Azerbaijan – we’re just on the way”.
The article reads: “Azerbaijan is taking part in the European Championships for the first time. The country’s “old and new” sport is on the way up.
“At the World Championships we will have a big team,” Mirali Kazimov says. He is President of the Orienteering Federation in the country, and very keen and active in the work to get the sport to grow and get better international results.
The sport of orienteering has a tradition of over 50 years in Azerbaijan, but when the Soviet Union was disbanded it also became a weaker period for orienteering in Azerbaijan. “Now we get political support for the work being done and we look forward to progress,” the President says.
Shahriyar Ismayilov was one of the athletes taking part in the Sprint. “I have done orienteering for one year,” he says. He has learnt fast and is eager like the other orienteers from Azerbaijan who are taking part in the European Championships for first time.”
