Champions League cup goes to Bayern museum - PHOTOS - VIDEO

One year after the heartbreak of losing the Champions League final at home, Bayern Munich sit atop Europe after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley Stadium in London.

Arjen Robben scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to send Bayern to their fifth Champions League title. They now share third place with Liverpool for the most number of Champions League titles won. It is also the second Champions League final victory for Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes who famously won the title back in 1998 with Real Madrid.

Of the two sides, Dortmund started the brighter as they controlled the first 25 minutes playing with greater purpose and a conviction that yielded several opportunities. However, Bayern sprung to life in the 26th minute on a counterattack that saw a Franck Ribery cross from the left connect with Mario Mandzukic who headed on goal and forced Roman Weidenfeller into a fingertip save of the ball that glanced the top of the crossbar. Bastian Schweinsteiger's resulting free kick fell to former Athletic Bilbao man Javi Martinez who thumped a header that just sailed over the crossbar.

Four minutes later Bayern missed out on another golden opportunity as Robben was left one-on-one down the right flank with Weidenfeller only to see the Dortmund netminder block the Dutchman's effort. Dortmund's best chance at goal arrived in the 35th minute as Robert Lewandowski brilliantly spun off Jerome Boateng deep in the area but Manuel Neuer did well to close down on the Polish striker and the goal was averted.

Two minutes form the interval, Robben again had a chance at goal as he slipped past Mats Hummels and gathered in a long ball. However, the former Real Madrid man's shot struck the face of Weidenfeller and deflected away from danger. It would end up being the final chance of a high-flying first half that surprisingly ended with no goals scored.

As the match progressed into the body of the second half, Bayern finally struck for the game's first goal. A nice combination worked between Ribéry and Robben resulted in a Mandzukic goal for the Munich side in the 60th minute. Robben dished to Ribery whose push into the area was met by three Dortmund defenders. The Frenchman was able to slip in a pass to Robben who then used his always-lethal left foot to cross to an unmarked Mandzukic. It was an easy swipe into the net for Mandzukic who celebrated with zeal in front of the Bayern fans.

However, the lead for Heynckes' side only lasted seven minutes as Dortmund were awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge from Dante. The Brazilian lifted his knee into an onrushing Marco Reus and the referee did not hesitate to blow his whistle and point to the spot. Ilkay Gündogan confidently strode up and beat Neuer to level the score.

The equalizer lifted the match to a pulsating level as both teams hunted for the game-winner. A Bayern counterattack in the 72nd was inches away from ending in a goal as Robben bore down and looked destined to slot home a Thomas Müller cross after Mueller had deked past Weidenfeller. Yet, a last-gasp clearance from Neven Subotic saved Dortmund and preserved the 1-1 scoreline, as the former United States youth international slid in front of Robben and just managed to clear the ball off the line.

But one minute from time Robben would get another chance and this time made good on it. A long ball into Ribéry bounced off the back heel of the former Marseille man. Robben knifed through the Dortmund defense to get to the ball and then slotted past Weidenfeller giving redemption to the player who missed an extra time penalty in last year's final against Chelsea.

The final whistle sparked a Bayern celebration, as the 2010 and 2012 runners-up can now lay claim to the title as the best team in Europe.
