The 8 km Stadium in Baku is listed among 16 best new stadiums opened in 2012. Now online voting process began and in a month we’ll know which stadium proved most popular for people worldwide.
For the first time a stadium from Azerbaijan has been nominated for ‘Stadium of the Year’ title, awarded every year to the best football arena opened worldwide. T
o be listed, every venue needs to meet several criteria, like capacity of over 10,000 people, and needs to stand out from the rest. Competition organizers, StadiumDB.com and Stadiony.net, are sure that Azerbaijan and the whole region will deliver many more great stadia in the next several years.
“We already see fantastic projects being constructed across Azerbaijan, of course with the Olympic Stadium being the most awaited”, says Grzegorz Kaliciak, founder of the websites hosting ‘Stadium of the Year’ since 2010. ”We would gladly include the renovated Republican Stadium as well, but our regulations don’t allow renovations”, says Kaliciak.
Organizers compiled the list of 16 best stadiums opened in 2012 around the world. The competition is open for everyone online. Each person who votes may select 5 stadiums and give them points. On February 23 the voting will be closed and all votes summarized, revealing most popular venue of the year.
Stadium of the Year has so far been won by Aviva Stadium in Ireland (2010) and PGE Arena Gdansk in Poland (2011). Who will win the vote for 2012?/Today.Az/
