Baku is among potential candidate cities that intend to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. Toronto (Canada), St. Petersburg (Russia), Rome (Italy) and Doha (Qatar) are also potential 2024 bidders
Earlier Baku intended to host the Olympics in 2016 and in 2020, but failed. In September, at its Session [congress] in Buenos Aires, the International Olympic Committee will select the host city for the 2020 Games.
Candidate cities for 2020 are Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo. A factor in the voting for 2020 will be the ambitions of cities and countries for the succeeding 2022 Winter Games and, even more significantly, the 2024 summer Olympics. Interested cities could be Paris and Rome – and now Hamburg and Berlin.
But an Istanbul or Tokyo win could open the door for a successful German bid in 2024 and Germany's International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president Thomas Bach, said it is something that definitely excites him.
“We are very pleased with the interest being shown by Berlin and Hamburg in the 2024 Olympic Games. In September the IOC decides on 2020. That will be a clear indicator whether a European bid for 2024 is worthwhile,” he said.
It is expected that in case of victory in Istanbul over Madrid and Tokyo, Bach will help Germany to Berlin and Hamburg held the Games in 2024-m. It is also assumed that if he wins Madrid, Toronto and Doha chances increase.
