Valentin Khristov congratulated on winning first olympic medal for Azerbaijan in London - PHOTOS

Azerbaijan has added a first medal to their haul at the London Olympics as Valentin Khristov has claimed bronze in the men`s 56kg weightlifting event.

President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva watched the action.

Khristov made a successful start to the competition with a 123kg snatch lift at the first attempt.
He then extended the weight to 127kg for his second attempt, and managed it. However, Khristov failed to snatch 130kg in the third attempt, and ranked fourth in the event.

In the clean and jerk, the Azerbaijani weightlifter started with a 154kg lift, followed by an unsuccessful attempt to manage 158kg. The third attempt saw Khristov lift 159kg, which earned him the bronze medal with a total record of 286 pts.

The President congratulated the weightlifter and the national team`s coaches on the bronze medal.
