Azerbaijan to hold first championships on softball and frisbee

04 June 2012 [16:12] - TODAY.AZ
The country softball and frisbee championships will be organized for the first time in Azerbaijan in October, Chargé d`Affaires of US Embassy Adam Sterling said. The championships will be held in TISA, The International School of Azerbaijan with support of the US Embassy in Azerbaijan.

Volunteers of Peace Corps operating in Azerbaijan involved 250 youth, including 40 girls from regions to indulge in softball. Adam Sterling noted that if Azerbaijani sportsmen will succeed in local championships, they would compete in international tournament.

Softball is a direct descendant of baseball although there are some key differences: softballs are bigger than baseballs, and the pitches are thrown underhand rather than overhand. Softball is played on a smaller diamond than in baseball; a softball field`s average distances from home plate to the center, left and right field fences are 220 feet (67 meters) for females and 250 feet (75 meters) for males. The corresponding baseball field average distances are 410 for center field and 325 feet for left & right field 125 and 99 meters.

A flying disc is a disc-shaped glider that is generally plastic and roughly 20 to 25 cm (7.9 to 9.8 in) in diameter, with a lip. The shape of the disc, an airfoil in cross-section, allows it to fly by generating lift as it moves through the air while spinning. The term frisbee, often used uncapitalized to generically describe all flying discs, has been a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company. Though such use is not encouraged by the company, the common use of the name as a generic term has put the trademark in jeopardy.
