Criminal case not to be launched on death of Azerbaijani editor-in-chief

Investigation into the death of Novruzali Mammadov, former department chief of Linguistics Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, editor-in-chief of Tolishi Sedo newspaper has ended, assistant prosecutor of Nizami district Nasir Farziyev said.
Farziyev said the instigation proved that Novruzali Mammadov died of a disease.

“His death was impartially investigated. The investigation team concluded that Mammadov died of anemic infarct. Therefore, criminal case will not be launched on the fact,” he said.

Mammadov died in the medical unit of Justice Ministry’s Penal Service on Aug. 17 this year. He had faced charges under articles 274 (high treason) and 283 (stirring up national, racial, religious enmity) of the Criminal Code and had been sentenced to 10 years in jail.
