Chief editor of Azerbaijan's Tolishi Sado newspaper dies in jail

Former department chief of Linguistics Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and editor-in-chief of the Tolishi Sado newspaper Novruzali Mammadov died in the medical facility of Justice Ministry on August 18, chief of Azerbaijani Committee against Torture Elchin Behbudov said.
The human rights defender said Mammadov’s relatives told him about it. Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service also confirmed the report to Behbudov.

Behbudov said Mammadov suddenly felt bad and doctors could not save his life.

Mammadov’s lawyer Ramiz Mammadov said his client died in the medical facility of Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service.

Mammadov had faced charges under articles 274 (high treason) and 283 (stirring up national, racial or religious hostility) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to 10 years in jail.
