Azerbaijan marks June 1 - Child Protection Day

June 1 — is Child Protection Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan too, State Committee on Family, Women and Children Problems department chief Senuber Alizade told.

She said that according to the Children's Rights Convention and law on children’s rights, people under 18 are regarded as children. There are 2.632 million children (31% of the population) in Azerbaijan. 49,000 of them are handicapped. If we take into consideration unregistered handicapped children their number will reach 52,000.

1000 out of 49,000 handicapped children are brought up in special institutions for special needs children. 23,000 of these children live in boarding schools.

70 percent of them have parents. Noting that there is no threat to reducing of children in Azerbaijan Alizade said their number is increasing now.

Decision on celebrating June 1 as International Child Protection Day was passed in the congress of International Democratic Federation of Women in Paris. This date is celebrated since 1950, APA reports.
