13 January 2006 [04:21] - TODAY.AZ
The price of the Internet in Baku is cheaper than elsewhere in the CIS, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Internet Society, Galib Gurbanov, told the “Internet in Azerbaijan: demise or development” news conference at the International Press Club Wednesday.

Assa-Irada reports that according to Gurbanov, while the price of the Internet in Baku is $0.15-0.40 per hour, the figure in Moscow is $0.90-1.20, in Kiev $0.15-0.40 and in Tbilisi $0.30-0.50. As for the price of monthly packages, it is $35-60 in Baku, $60 in Moscow, $400-500 in Astana, $30-60 in Kiev and $120 in Tbilisi. Gurbanov said there are 50,000 Internet users in Baku, 1,000,000 in Moscow, Astana and Kiev, and 100,000 in Tbilisi.

“In 2005, Internet providers reduced the tariffs by 40%,” the director of Oxygen Internet company, Ayaz Karimov, told the news conference. He said that starting from January 1, 2006, the Baku Telephone Communication Production Association had raised prices for those using broadband Internet (ADSL) eight times.

“If the tariffs of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies are lowered, then users will be able to pay less for the Internet,” Karimov added.
