Heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures have led to traffic stagnation and toughened daily life in Turkey, the European part of Russia and in Europe.

Planes have been grounded and ferry services disrupted in several places across the continent, while a number of people have died of the cold.

Weather models currently disagree on how long the cold snap will last although some forecasters are warning to brace for a month-long freeze.

The freezing temperatures will reach Azerbaijan next week, said Maharram Hasanov, a senior researcher at Climate and Agro-climatic Department of the Geography Institute of the ANAS.

“The atmospheric pressure in Azerbaijan is 750-755 mm Hg. The pressure gradually decreases. Therefore, cold air masses will reach Azerbaijan,” he told APA.

But, the expert says that by that time, the cold air masses will partially lose influence due to disappearance of some snow and rain clouds. "For instance, snow, which is being observed in Turkey and the European part of Russia won't reach Azerbaijan. The temperature will fall by 3-5 degrees and will correspond to the climate norm," he said.

Hasanov further stressed that last year the rainfall throughout the country exceeded the multi-year climate norm, while the temperature was 1 degree below normal.

"If we consider the temperatures observed in September, October and November, then one can see the difference. The spring precipitation was more, while in autumn, the difference was sharper. Over the past 25 years, there was no such rainfall as we observed in 2016," said Hasanov.

Meanwhile, the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry forecast changeable cloudy, occasionally gloomy weather for tomorrow.

On January 11, It will be foggy in some places in the capital. North-west wind will be followed with south wind in the afternoon

The temperature will be +2-4?C at night, +7-10?C in daytime, in Baku +2-4? C at night, +7-9? C in the daytime. Air pressure records 770.

Relative humidity will be 80-90% at night, 65-75% in the afternoon.

In the regions of Azerbaijan, the weather will be mainly dry.

It will be foggy in some places. Rain and drizzle is expected in some places in the evening.

West wind will blow. The temperature will be -2+3C at night, +8-13?C in daytime, -3+2 ?C in mountains at night, +3-8? C in daytime.
