It is important for Azerbaijani science to progress and contribute to the country’s general development.

President Ilham Aliyev made the remark at a meeting on November 9, as he attended the general meeting marking the 70th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The president noted that ANAS had come a long way and, today, plays an important role in the country’s development, while the ANAS scientists also contribute to the future development of Azerbaijan.

“The future of our country is directly linked to the level of our scientific potential,” the president stressed.

Noting the role of scientists in advancing the country's progress, President Aliyev said that in a world where new threats exist, it is important that every country relies on its own internal resources.

In his speech, the head of state noted a number of challenges the nation’s scientists should address.

Azerbaijan should make greater efforts to achieve sustainable economic development, so it never needs to be dependent on others and can best use its internal resources, the president stressed, and urged scientists to present valuable suggestions for combating existing challenges.

He pointed out that scientists need to begin working on a new strategy for demographic development, as well as on the development of the non-oil industry and on ensuring the security of the nation’s food supplies.

The president noted that the industrial and agricultural sectors would ensure continued development of the country, adding that there is a need to strengthen Azerbaijan’s international cooperation in the space industry.

Further, President Aliyev urged the country's scientists to become acquainted with those who have international experiences in the use of the latest technologies in the oil and gas sector, which is of strategic importance to Azerbaijan.

Today, Azerbaijan is known throughout the world as a reliable partner, playing a decisive role in oil and gas sectors and ensuring the energy security of a number of countries, said President Aliyev.

“Azerbaijani scientists today play an important role in successful implementation of oil and gas operations in the country, they are involved in cooperation with foreign partners and in projects realized by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan,” he said. “This area is, of course, also strategic for us.”

However, there are also other issues Azerbaijani scientists should be active in, the president noted, including the issue of multiculturalism and preserving the purity of the Azerbaijani language.

Moreover, Azerbaijan needs to fully display its history and realities on a global scale, so that in showing the rich history of the country, the president said, adding that it can assist in combating those provocations being carried out against the country.

The president also underlined that Nagorno-Karabakh, which is under the Armenian occupation for over 20 years, is a native Azerbaijani land, noting that “Karabakh” and “Khankendi” are Azerbaijani words. “Everyone should know that it is our land and we have the right to live there.”

The president further stressed that the time has come to develop a comprehensive, scientific project dedicated to the period of independence.

“We will mark the 25th anniversary of our independence,” said the president. “I believe that if such a solid scientific project is developed by that time, it can be a very good gift for our holiday.”

The country will see the 25th anniversary of its independence in 2016.

Speaking about the nation’s military industry, President Aliyev said that today Azerbaijan produces more than a thousand military items, and the basic equipment of the Azerbaijani Army, at the expense of domestic production.

“Azerbaijan meets the major part of its army’s demand,” said Aliyev. “It is a historic achievement, especially, taking into account that we live in conditions of war.”

President Aliyev emphasized that, today, domestic production allows meeting the demands of the Azerbaijani army. “Of course, we purchase modern technologies,” he said. “By purchasing this technology, we become familiar with it.”

Additionally, the head of state urged scientists to become more active with a view that the country is able to produce all types of weapons it needs in the future.
