How to make use of rain water?

To save decreasing drinking water, scientists recommend us to use rain water as service water.

Maharram Hasanov from Geography Institute of Azerbaijan's National Academy of Science says by using rain water as service water, people in Azerbaijan can save about 30-40 percent of drinking water.

Stressing the importance of the rational use of rainfall, the scientist said in some districts of Baku drinking water is used as service water - for irrigation of green spaces, for example.

Hasanov said the trees planted in Baku are usually resistant to dry climate. They need to be watered only once or two a week. To this end, rainwater is enough.

Compared to other regions of the country, sufficiently small amount of precipitation falls in the capital of Azerbaijan during the year, according to the scientist.

The scientist noted that rainwater can be collected using special devices, in particular, on the roofs of high-rise buildings of the city. He also added that Absheron economic region (Baku, Sumgait, Absheron and Khizi districts) is the only area of Azerbaijan, which does not have its own water sources. As a result, Baku, which has an extremely high population density, goes through the persistent problems of drinking water shortage.

Hasanov also proposed to turn the industrial enterprises of Azerbaijan into the system of the closed cycle water use.

"Most enterprises in Baku use water for technical purposes (for cooling units and so on), and then the water goes down to the sewage," the scientist said. "Meanwhile, this water can be reused after processing."
