Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran sign several documents in railway transport

08 February 2011 [14:33] - TODAY.AZ
Representatives of transport administrations of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran signed three documents on cooperation within the meeting on the transport corridor project North-South and the development of railways, IRINN news channel's website reported on Monday.

The signing of the documents is the result of talks of the leaders of three countries' railway departments. One of the documents is a trilateral, while the remaining two were signed between Azerbaijan and Iran, as well as Iran and Russia.

The trilateral agreement envisages accelerating the implementation of the Southern Transport Corridor project. The agreement between Iran and Russia implies cooperation in the construction of railways and technical support, as well as covers electrification of the Tehran - Bandar Abbas railway. In turn, the agreement between Iran and Azerbaijan envisages cooperation in the implementation of railway projects.

The head of Iranian Railways Department Abdulali Sahib Mohammadi as a result of the ceremony said that the sides will work together in the implementation of railway project Qazvin-Rasht-Astara. He also noted that the transport corridor North-South is one of the important transportation projects, and it is especially important to note its role in terms of development of railway transport.

According to him, currently cargo delivery on North-South route is carried out by sea, which delays the process up to 45 days, but after construction of the railway, it may be shortened to 25 days. One of the advantages of this corridor is the fact that it will accelerate the development of relations with European countries and will allow reaching 30-percent saving on cargo transportation.

The railway Qazvin - Rasht-Astara (Iran) - Astara (Azerbaijan) is part of the transport corridor North-South.

The scope of work in Azerbaijan envisages the construction of a 8.5-kilometer-long railway to the Astara station with systems of changing wheel pairs, a bridge, and border and customs infrastructure. It is also necessary to build a border railway bridge. This project will be implemented on a parity basis with Iran.
