Phillip Gordon: Azerbaijan and Armenia should achieve reconciliation

20 October 2010 [13:35] - TODAY.AZ
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State has clarified the U.S. position on the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations.
"We wanted both countries to ratify the protocols and implement them," U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon said in the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the Paul Henry Nitze Center for International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University in response top journalists' questions concerning the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation, according to the Azerbaijani service of Voice of America.

"We believe that such a move would help peace and stability in the Caucasus. But this [ratification] has not happened. And we're sorry about this. It is possible that there will be necessary conditions for this in the future," he said.

According to Gordon, both Turkey and Armenia and Armenia and Azerbaijan should achieve reconciliation.

"This reconciliation is important for the United States," Gordon added.
