Georgian president urged journalists to more responsibility

16 March 2010 [08:00] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia's President calls upon journalists to be more responsible towards journalistic standards and professional activities, spokesperson of president Manana Manjgaladze said to a press briefing on March 15.

According to her, president understands the public reaction in connection with the plot of Imedi television channel, as this reaction was justified. The president believes that the journalists violated the standards. In addition, he considers absurd the claim that as though president and government were complicit in this.

"Georgia is a democratic country and the government has no tools of control over media. In that case, if there was censorship, the government first would be interested in avoiding this plot from ether," said Manjgaladze.

The spokesperson gave comments on other accusations made in those days, especially on the fact that the plot was made to discredit the opposition before the elections.

"This accusation is absurd. Those forces that are associated with the opposition have zero chance of winning the election because they do not have popular support, so they can not be considered rivals to the authorities. Although the party in power has rivals, and these are those forces, whose leaders are not run to Moscow," said Manjgaladze.
