02 March 2010 [18:32] - TODAY.AZ
The 23rd International Conference of Islamic Unity has opened in the Iranian capital, Tehran, with focus on major challenges facing Muslims across the globe.
The World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought hosts the three-day conference which brings together scholars from 48 Muslim countries as well as Islam experts from different Western countries.

The conference aims to promote unity and dialogue among Muslim countries and find ways to solve problems facing the Islamic World.

Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani delivered an opening speech on Tuesday, in which he called on Muslims to foster unity in face of the enemies' plots.

"Division, discord and inappropriate contention along with the waste of existing resources and opportunities," Ayatollah Rafsanjani said, was among the unfavorable results of Muslims not collaborating well with each other.

The senior cleric called on Muslims to refer to the Holy Qur'an as the most reliable source in order to heal any possible rifts.
