Georgia's Azerbaijanis concerned over possible closing of Azerbaijani schools

He said only Georgian schools can operate in Georgia in accordance with Georgia's legislation. The rest schools where lessons are not held in Georgian operate temporarily.

Once the Georgian government begins to enforce this law, Azerbaijani schools can be fully closed, Asgarov said.

According to unofficial information, approximately 500,000 Azerbaijanis live in Georgia, mainly, in Kvemo-Kartli (Borchali).

At present, there are 120 Azerbaijani schools in Georgia.

Geyrat movement head also expressed anxiety that principals of eight Azerbaijani schools are Georgians.

He also stressed the problem with text books. "Books cost 14-15 lari ($8-9). Azerbaijanis face difficulties while buying books," he added.
