Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Kyrgyz counterpart Sooronbay Jeenbekov held a meeting which highlighted economic interaction between the neighbors, resolution of border issues and cooperation in regional projects, the press service of the Tajik leader said on July 9.

During the meeting, the heads of state advocated the activation of the activities of the bilateral Intergovernmental Commission for the development of trade and economic relations, the increase in trade turnover, the use of huge resources for cooperation, the efficient use of water resources, and the timely implementation of the CASA-1000 regional project.

CASA-1000 is an interregional electricity transmission project in Central and South Asia to connect four countries - Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. It is presupposed that the project will create opportunities for the export of electricity surplus in summer period from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan through Afghanistan.

Within the framework of the project, Tajikistan will export 70 percent of electricity to Pakistan, and 30 percent to Kyrgyzstan. The project will provide transit of up to 5 billion kWh of electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Pakistan.

The meeting also focused on the border issues between the two states. To promptly resolve border issues, it was proposed to sign the agreement on the state border and the intergovernmental agreement on the prohibition of economic activities at the borderline until the completion of the process of determining the state border line between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The parties noted the need to attach international status to the Karamyk checkpoint for solving many issues related to socio-economic relations.

Also, issues of cooperation in the field of agriculture, establishment of enterprises for the processing of agricultural products, cooperation in the transport and transit areas and other spheres of the economy were discussed at the meeting.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have a similar position on the solution of global and regional problems and hold a special opinion on the issue of ensuring international and regional security and stability.
