The rapprochement between Russia and Turkey, as well as the cooperation of the two regional powers, is very important for achieving peace in the region, UNESCO Cultural Diplomacy, Governance and Education Chair Holder, Director of Diplomatic and Strategic Studies Center in Paris, Naciye Selin Senocak told Trend on December 11.

Senocak was commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to Turkey.

The expert said that close cooperation between Moscow and Ankara also contributes to confronting the forces that are interested in destabilizing the situation in the region after the declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"If Ankara and Moscow continue to closely cooperate, this will stop the influence of the forces that are interested in destabilizing the situation in the Middle East," she said.

The expert said that no country and no political leader has the right to use Jerusalem, which is the capital of the three world religions, in own interests as the consequences of this can be deplorable.

Previously, US President Donald Trump proclaimed that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israel proclaimed Jerusalem its capital after the end of the War of Independence in 1949. In 1967, after the Six Days War, it seized East Jerusalem and united it with the West Jerusalem, but the UN did not recognize this. Embassies of countries that have diplomatic relations with Israel are located mainly in Tel Aviv, Herzliya and Ramat Gan.
