Turkey, EU can intensify cooperation

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Chairman of the European Council Donald Tusk and Head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels.

The meeting was held behind the closed doors and lasted about an hour, Anadolu news agency reported on May 25.

Reportedly the sides discussed the relations between Turkey and the EU and the steps that can be taken in the future in this area.

Erdogan stressed the importance of implementing the agreement on migrants, signed by Ankara and Brussels in March 2016. In addition, the importance of intensifying cooperation between Turkey and the EU, in particular, in the fight against terrorism, was pointed out.

Erdogan also met with Chairman of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani. The meeting was also attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Omer Celik and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak.

During the meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes, the parties discussed the relations between Turkey and the European Parliament.

Erdogan also held talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Brussels as well.

The meeting was held in a positive atmosphere, and the parties discussed relations between Turkey and France, mainly in the spheres of politics and economy.

The Presidents stressed their commitment to further strengthening Turkish-French relations and increasing bilateral trade to 20 billion euros.

In addition, the parties discussed the situation in Syria and Iraq, the fight against terrorists PKK and IS, and other topical issues on the regional agenda.

Turkey-EU relations have intensified in recent months with parties closely cooperating to stem the flow of refugees into the EU.

Turkey is the EU's 4th largest export market and 5th largest provider of imports. The EU is by far Turkey's number one import and export partner.
