A new version of the law “On Combating Corruption” is being prepared in Turkmenistan, the country’s defense minister, secretary of the State Security Council, Yaylym Berdiyev said.

He made the remarks at a joint meeting of the Turkmen government and the State Security Council, Turkmenistan State News Agency reported.

He mentioned that the anti-corruption law, which will be amended, will define the legal and organizational bases for combating corruption in order to prevent, detect and disclose offenses, as well as prosecute those guilty of committing them.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that this work is aimed at protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens, increasing the efficiency of state bodies, ensuring the national security and stable economic development of Turkmenistan. In addition, the head of state raised the issue of recruitment and placement of personnel in leadership positions.

He said that the relevance of this topic is revealed by the recently disclosed facts of bribery and corruption among responsible civil servants.

The Turkmen leader stressed that strict requirements should be created for candidates for leading posts.

Berdimuhamedov noted the need to develop a list of such requirements on the basis of legislation, including qualifying criteria for taking up a particular post.

In mid-May 2017, it was reported that criminal cases related to bribery and embezzlement of state property were launched in Turkmenistan.
